AI4PEP/AIZoOM Mongolia Project Launching Workshop

The AIZoOM project officially commenced its operations with a high-level Launching Workshop held at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST). This event marked a significant milestone in the collaboration between the Global South AI for Pandemic & Epidemic Preparedness & Response Network (AI4PEP) and Mongolian health and technology sectors.

Opening & Vision

The workshop began with inspiring opening remarks from the Vice President for Research and Innovation at MUST, emphasizing the university's commitment to applied research.

Prof. Tseren-Onolt Ishdorj, the Principal Investigator, provided a comprehensive introduction to the AIZoOM project, outlining the roadmap for 2025-2027. Following this, Dr. Enkhbold Sereenen from the Ministry of Health highlighted the critical need for technological innovation in post-COVID public health strategies, specifically targeting rural areas where resources are often limited.

Scientific Seminars

The core of the workshop featured technical deep-dives into the dual challenges of the project: Epidemiology and Artificial Intelligence.

  • AI in Health: Dr. Ankhbayar.N discussed the current landscape of AI applications in the health sector, setting the stage for how AIZoOM will utilize machine learning for anomaly detection.
  • The Plague Threat: Prof. Battogtokh.Ch and Dolgorkhand.A provided detailed analyses of the Yersinia pestis pathogen and the epidemiological history of plague in Mongolia from 1988-2017.
  • Surveillance Systems: Ariunbold.Kh from the National Center for Zoonotic Diseases (NCZD) presented the current status of outbreak surveillance, identifying key gaps that AIZoOM aims to fill.

Moving Forward

The event concluded with a vibrant discussion session involving stakeholders from MNUMS, NCZD, and the Ministry of Health. The workshop successfully established a shared vision: moving from reactive response to proactive, data-driven surveillance.

The team is now preparing for the initial deployment of sensors in the selected pilot soums in the coming months.
